Lead Developer /Software Development Manager. Gloucestershire (Primarily Office-Based) salary c£70,000 + Benefits
An established national profit-with-a-purpose organisation with strong social benefit is seeking an experienced Lead Developer / Development Manager to lead the next phase of its software and digital transformation.
This is a highly visible and influential role with responsibility for shaping the organisation's software strategy, developing internal capability and reducing reliance on external suppliers by bringing key systems and technical platforms in-house. You will combine strong technical expertise with excellent communication skills, commercial awareness and the ability to build relationships across the organisation and with external partners.
The Opportunity. This role has been created to support the transition of several externally managed systems and digital platforms into an internal development function - starting from a blank piece of paper - nearly!
Working closely with stakeholders across the business, you will develop a clear roadmap for this transition, establish strong working relationships with existing suppliers and help create a long-term strategy for software development and digital services. You will play a key role in shaping the future development capability of the organisation, including the potential to build and lead a wider internal development team over time.

Location The role will be primarily based from the organisation's headquarters in Gloucestershire, particularly during the initial onboarding and transition period, with greater flexibility thereafter, and alternative London satellite office may be considered for the right individual.

Key Responsibilities
- Build, lead and mentor a small development team whilst helping shape future team growth
- Develop strong relationships with internal stakeholders across all business functions
- Build effective partnerships with existing third-party suppliers and development partners
- Create and deliver a roadmap for transitioning externally managed systems and services in-house
- Take ownership of software applications, web platforms and digital products
- Drive continuous improvement across systems, processes and development practices
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, effectiveness and commercial performance through technology
- Contribute to technical design, development and solution delivery where required
- Promote best practice in software development, security and Agile delivery
Skills & Experience We are seeking an experienced technical leader who combines strong development expertise with outstanding people and communication skills. You will have:-
- Previous experience leading, mentoring or managing developers
- Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building skills
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical audiences
- A proactive and solutions-focused approach
- Experience driving change, improving systems and implementing new ways of working
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of how technology can contribute to organisational performance and profitability
- Experience managing or working alongside third-party suppliers and outsourced development partners
Technically, experience in several of the following areas would be beneficial:-
- PHP development
- C# / .NET development
- Web application development
- SQL and database technologies
- API integrations
- Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure or GCP)
- Agile delivery environments
- Modern software development practices
